Airline Pilot Training - How To Make It On To The Big Metal!

If you are searching for airline pilot training or airline careers, then you are obviously looking for what path you must take in order to fly for the major airlines.

There are two paths you can follow for your airline careers. The first is to complete all your training up to and including a Commercial Pilot License with a Multi Engine Rating and an IFR Rating.

From there you can find an entry level job with a smaller aviation company flying freight, or charter work. Once you have built up the necessary hours you can apply to the regional airlines, and then to the majors.

The second way to pursue airline pilot training is to enroll into an airline pilot training course. These courses are not so common.

I am aware of a few, namely Cathay Pacific, Dragon Air, Quantas Airlines (I'm sure there are more out there). These courses are tough to get into. You must be a resident, or have ties, to the country where the airline is located in order to enroll in their program.

If you can get into one of the programs then the reward is worth it. Upon completion of airline pilot training with one of these programs, you are hired as a second officer (cruise pilot) and you work on long haul flights building your hours. You will then progress up the ladder until you are a Captain.

The United States offers a similar pilot training program. Delta Academy and Mesa Academy are two that I can think of off the top of my head.

They offer programs that will take you from scratch all the way up to being a First Officer on a regional jet. They also offer you a job, during training, as a flight instructor.

As you can see there are some options for you if your goal is to fly for the major airlines. In fact, those major airlines will help you reach your goals and in turn they receive quality trained pilots.

The upside to this route is your potential for getting that all illusive first job is a lot higher than other newly licensed pilots.

The downside of this route is the cost. I have seen quotes as high as $65,000 USD and I'm sure that some Academy's costs are even higher. I say, if you have the money....GO FOR IT

International students are also welcome at some of these Academy's, so do some research and find the best fit for you. (Note: A news report was released last year announcing a new flight school opening up in Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada. Apparently they are going to offer an airline pilot training course, as well as other courses. Anticipated start date is September 2008)
