How aerobatic is a Vans RV9?

by Bill Booth
(Cornwall, UK)

Hi I nearly have a PPL and I am looking into buildig a Vans RV7 or 9 and was wondering how 'aerobatic' the RV9 is - eg I wingovers, tight turns etc? For me, it's apparent docility for a low hours pilot would be beneficial but I am wondering what the limits of performance are??

Also the pic on your RV9 page doesn't appear to be an RV9...

Thanks,

Bill

Hiya Bill,

Sorry for the delay in answering your question. I've been away from my computer for a few weeks and only have limited access to the internet at this time.

Vans Aircraft's website, and in particular their RV9/9A page, does not even mention that the aircraft falls into the Aerobatic Category, unlike the RV7/7A where it is mentioned in the second paragraph. I believe this may be because the 9/9A is designed for a lower HP engine. My advice to you is to visit Doug Reeves' website at http://www.vansairforce.net There is a forums section there where you can pose your question to other 9/9A pilots.

As for the pic, you are correct, Sir. That is in fact an RV8. Good eyes! When I get home I'll change that :)
