Air France crash: First body recovered from seabed

A French team has recovered the first body from the seabed debris of the Air France jet that crashed into the Atlantic in 2009, killing 228 people.

The body was brought to the surface by mini-submarines from a depth of almost 4km (2.4 miles).

Samples are being sent to labs in France for DNA identification. Police are not sure whether all the bodies can be raised from the wreckage.

Air France cockpit voice recorder recovered

The discovery comes two days after the airliner's flight data recorder was also retrieved from the ocean.

Both recorders are said to be in good physical condition.

Air France voice recorder found

The cockpit voice recorder from a 2009 Air France crash in the Atlantic Ocean has been found and recovered, France said Tuesday.

The crash of Flight 447 from Rio de Janeiro to Paris killed all 228 people on board.

The recovery of the voice recorder came just days after French air accident investigators said the jet's flight data recorder had been found.

The two recorders will be key to helping investigators try to determine what caused the Airbus 330 to crash. The aircraft plunged into the ocean after encountering a thunderstorm.

The voice recorder was found Monday by a submarine searching in about 3,900 meters of water, and was raised to the surface on Tuesday.

The condition of the recorder was not immediately known.

Osama bin Laden, the driving force behind the Sept. 11 attacks, is dead, ending a decade long manhunt for the world's most wanted terrorist, U.S. President Barack Obama announced Sunday night.

(CNN) Osama bin Laden, the mastermind of the worst terrorist attacks on American soil, is dead, almost 10 years after the attacks that killed about 3,000 people.

The founder and leader of al Qaeda was killed by U.S. forces Monday in a mansion in Abbottabad, about 50 kilometers (31 miles) north of the Pakistani capital of Islamabad, U.S. officials said.

Four others in the compound were also killed. One of them was bin Laden's adult son, and another was a woman being used as a shield by a male combatant, the officials said.

Bin Laden's body was later buried at sea, an official said. Many Muslims adhere to the belief that bodies should be buried within one day.

US forces kill Osama Bin Laden in Pakistan

Al Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden has been killed by US forces in Pakistan, President Barack Obama has said.

Bin Laden was killed in a ground operation outside Islamabad based on US intelligence, the first lead for which emerged last August.

Mr Obama said after "a firefight", US forces took possession of the body.

Bin Laden is believed to be the mastermind of the attacks on New York and Washington on 11 September 2001 and a number of others.

Crucial 'memory unit' from 2009 Air France crash recovered

(CNN) -- The memory unit that may tell why an Air France jet plunged into the Atlantic nearly two years ago was recovered from the bottom of the ocean Sunday, France's Bureau of Investigation and Analysis (BEA) said.

A remote-controlled submarine, known as the Remora 6000, located the memory unit Sunday morning and it was lifted on board the search ship Ile de Sein six hours later, the Paris-based BEA said.

All 228 people aboard the Air France Flight 447 were killed when the plane fell into the ocean on the way from Rio de Janeiro to Paris on June 1, 2009.

Air France flight data recorder recovered

One of two flight recorders from an Air France plane that crashed in 2009 off the coast of Brazil has been recovered, officials say.

France's Bureau of Investigation said in a statement that the device was "in good physical condition".

French search teams last week found the outer casing of the so-called black box recorder, but not its memory.

The Air France Airbus plane went down in the Atlantic on 1 June 2009, killing all 228 people on board.

Air France black box found off Brazil coast

France's air accident investigation agency says an undersea search has located the flight data recorder from the 2009 Air France flight that went down in the mid-Atlantic.

In a statement, the BEA said the so-called black box was "localized and identified" on Sunday morning. The statement included photos of the recorder, a cylinder partially buried in sand on the sea floor.

Investigators hope the recorder will help determine what caused the June 1, 2009, crash of Flight 447 from Rio de Janeiro to Paris. The data and voice recorders, though coloured dark orange, are referred to as "black boxes."

Air France crash: The long hunt for answers

A recovery team is setting sail for the crash site of Air France flight 447, which disappeared over the Atlantic two years ago. Leaving from a port in Senegal on board the French vessel Ile de Sein, search experts and investigators are hoping to recover the aircraft's "black box" flight recorders, which may finally explain why the aircraft plunged into the ocean, killing everyone on board.

Air France crash: The vessels used in salvage operation

21 April 2011 Last updated at 01:49 ET Help An operation begins later this week to recover parts of an Air France plane that crashed into the southern Atlantic north-east of Brazil in 2009, killing all 228 people on board.

Although some of the victims' bodies and wreckage - including part of the tail - were found in the days following the accident, it was not until this month that the bulk of the plane was discovered.

The team working on the project hopes to find the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder among the wreckage located on the ocean floor.

Phoenix International's Tim Weller showed Tom Burridge the kind of vehicle the US-based firm will be using to recover the wreckage.

New US protections announced for air travellers

Airlines will soon be forced to raise compensation for passengers who are bumped from flights, and to show fees up front under new US government rules.

The laws, which take effect in August, will ensure passengers won't be delayed on the tarmac for hours, and require reimbursement of fees for lost luggage.

US transport secretary Ray LaHood said in a statement the new rules were meant to treat passengers with respect.

"Airline passengers have a right to be treated fairly," he said.

Plane carrying Michelle Obama aborts landing

Washington (CNN) -- A plane carrying Michelle Obama had to abort its landing on Monday after it came too close to a military C-17 cargo plane ahead of it, according to a senior administration official and the Federal Aviation Administration.

The planes -- which were both trying to land -- were three miles apart, when they are supposed to be five miles apart, the official told CNN. The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating what went wrong, as it is believed to be an air traffic controller mistake, the official said.

US air controller suspended after watching film at work

A US air traffic controller has been suspended for watching a film when he was supposed to be monitoring aircraft, in the wake of a series of reports of controllers sleeping at work.

The incident occurred on Sunday at a radar centre in Oberlin in Ohio, the Federal Aviation Administration said.

The worker's microphone inadvertently transmitted the movie's audio to all nearby planes, the FAA said.

Another air traffic controller suspended for sleeping

Washington (CNN) -- The Federal Aviation Administration suspended Saturday yet another air traffic controller for sleeping on the job, the seventh apparent incident this year the agency has disclosed.

The incident occurred at the Miami Air Route Traffic Control Center during the midnight shift early Saturday morning, two days before the FAA is expected to conduct meetings on air traffic control safety and professionalism, the FAA reported.

According to a preliminary review of air traffic tapes, the controller did not miss any calls from aircraft and there was no operational impact, the agency said in a statement. The incident was reported to a manager by another controller, the FAA said. There were 12 controllers and two managers on duty.
