A French team has recovered the first body from the seabed debris of the Air France jet that crashed into the Atlantic in 2009, killing 228 people.

The body was brought to the surface by mini-submarines from a depth of almost 4km (2.4 miles).

Samples are being sent to labs in France for DNA identification. Police are not sure whether all the bodies can be raised from the wreckage.

The cockpit voice recorder from a 2009 Air France crash in the Atlantic Ocean has been found and recovered, France said Tuesday.

The crash of Flight 447 from Rio de Janeiro to Paris killed all 228 people on board.

The recovery of the voice recorder came just days after French air accident investigators said the jet's flight data recorder had been found.

The two recorders will be key to helping investigators try to determine what caused the Airbus 330 to crash. The aircraft plunged into the ocean after encountering a thunderstorm.

The voice recorder was found Monday by a submarine searching in about 3,900 meters of water, and was raised to the surface on Tuesday.

The condition of the recorder was not immediately known.

(CNN) Osama bin Laden, the mastermind of the worst terrorist attacks on American soil, is dead, almost 10 years after the attacks that killed about 3,000 people.

The founder and leader of al Qaeda was killed by U.S. forces Monday in a mansion in Abbottabad, about 50 kilometers (31 miles) north of the Pakistani capital of Islamabad, U.S. officials said.

Four others in the compound were also killed. One of them was bin Laden's adult son, and another was a woman being used as a shield by a male combatant, the officials said.

Bin Laden's body was later buried at sea, an official said. Many Muslims adhere to the belief that bodies should be buried within one day.

A remote-controlled submarine, known as the Remora 6000, located the memory unit Sunday morning and it was lifted on board the search ship Ile de Sein six hours later, the Paris-based BEA said.

All 228 people aboard the Air France Flight 447 were killed when the plane fell into the ocean on the way from Rio de Janeiro to Paris on June 1, 2009.

France's air accident investigation agency says an undersea search has located the flight data recorder from the 2009 Air France flight that went down in the mid-Atlantic.

In a statement, the BEA said the so-called black box was "localized and identified" on Sunday morning. The statement included photos of the recorder, a cylinder partially buried in sand on the sea floor.

Investigators hope the recorder will help determine what caused the June 1, 2009, crash of Flight 447 from Rio de Janeiro to Paris. The data and voice recorders, though coloured dark orange, are referred to as "black boxes."

21 April 2011 Last updated at 01:49 ET Help An operation begins later this week to recover parts of an Air France plane that crashed into the southern Atlantic north-east of Brazil in 2009, killing all 228 people on board.

Although some of the victims' bodies and wreckage - including part of the tail - were found in the days following the accident, it was not until this month that the bulk of the plane was discovered.

The team working on the project hopes to find the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder among the wreckage located on the ocean floor.

Phoenix International's Tim Weller showed Tom Burridge the kind of vehicle the US-based firm will be using to recover the wreckage.

The incident occurred at the Miami Air Route Traffic Control Center during the midnight shift early Saturday morning, two days before the FAA is expected to conduct meetings on air traffic control safety and professionalism, the FAA reported.

According to a preliminary review of air traffic tapes, the controller did not miss any calls from aircraft and there was no operational impact, the agency said in a statement. The incident was reported to a manager by another controller, the FAA said. There were 12 controllers and two managers on duty.

Wreckage from an Air France jet lost over the Atlantic nearly two years ago with 228 people on board has been found, French investigators say.

With the cause of the crash still unknown, a fourth attempt to locate the plane's voice and data recorders got under way last month.

Searchers located wreckage during the past 24 hours, investigators in Paris said, without giving details.

Flight 447 from Rio de Janeiro to Paris came down in a storm on 1 June 2009.

A French judge recently filed preliminary manslaughter charges against Air France over the crash.

Airbus, the maker of the jet, says no one can know for sure how the crash occurred unless the so-called "black boxes" are found.

The search has been financed jointly by Air France and Airbus. It involves dives to depths of up to 4,000m (13,120ft) with the use of special robots to examine the ocean floor between Brazil and West Africa.
