PPL UK - Private Pilots Licence For The United Kingdom

Private Pilots Licence ( PPL UK ) in Europe (JAA)

For the folks of the United Kingdom you will need a JAA license to fly. This license is generic for all of Europe, not just the UK.

To obtain a private pilot license in Europe you either have to enroll at a flight school or become a member of a flying club.

The availability of training facilities, in Europe, vary depending on where you live. If you want to learn to fly strictly for leisure a flight club is usually the least expensive alternative.

You will require a certain amount of training. You need a minimum of 40 hours flight time and you will have to pass a written exam. The written exam covers everything you have covered during your ground school. It is typically a multiple-choice test.

Once the written exam is out of the way you can concentrate on the flying. Your instructor will teach the basics needed to fly.

You will learn how to take off, climb, turn, decend, land, stall recoveries, slow flight, possibly spin/spiral dive recovery, and perform emergencies in the circuit and in the training area.

When your instructor feels comfortable that you can do this safely he/she signs you of for a solo flight.

Airplane After your solo flight, the next 20-50 hours are reserved for dual and solo flights covering such topics as cross country flights, to learn how to properly navigate, solo training flights and solo cross country flights.

When your instructor feels that you have mastered the necessary skills he/she recommends you for a flight test.

A flight test is conducted by a certified examiner and is done in the airplane you learned to fly in. For example, if you did the bulk of your private pilot training on a Cessna 172 then this is the airplane you will do your flight test in.

You start by having a short oral exam. During the oral exam you are asked some questions to test your knowledge level. You will also cover a pre-planned cross country flight.

After the oral exam you will take the flight portion of the exam which lasts roughly an hour and a half. You will be tested on the basic elements of flying, as mentioned above, navigation skills, and emergencies both during the cross country portion and in the circuit/pattern.

After passing the flight test the examiner will issue you a PPL UK and you are now a newly minted JAA pilot.
